INTRODUCTION

AN OVERVIEW OF BIBLICAL COUNSELING

The Biblical Counseling ministry can be described as “Living a Godly, Christ-centered life and passing it on to others”.

WHAT IS COUNSELING?

LET GOD’S WORD TELL US WHAT COUNSELING IS

"His name will be called Wonderful Counselor” (Isaiah 9:6). The Scripture lets us know that the Lord is to be our counselor.  This is the anchor truth in counseling.

GOD’S WORD IN COUNSELING

COUNSEL FROM THE LIVING WORD, NOT THE WORLD

The Word of God is our foundation for life and godliness. It is living and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). In biblical counseling, we rely fully on the sufficiency of Scripture to address the heart—not human opinions or theories. God’s Word is enough.

THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN COUNSELING

GOD HIMSELF COUNSELS THROUGH HIS INDWELLING SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is not an optional part of the counseling process—He is essential. Jesus said, “When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). Biblical counseling depends not on our wisdom, but on the Spirit’s power to convict, comfort, and guide.

PRAYER IN COUNSELING

SEEKING THE LORD, NOT JUST SOLUTIONS

Prayer is not a formality—it is fellowship with God. In counseling, we must go to Him first, during, and after every session. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God” (James 1:5). Prayer humbles us and invites God’s presence into the process of heart change.

CHURCH LIFE IN COUNSELING

DISCIPLESHIP HAPPENS WITHIN THE BODY OF CHRIST

Biblical counseling is not detached from the local church—it flourishes in it. God has designed the body of Christ to build itself up in love (Ephesians 4:16). Counseling must be rooted in the life, care, and accountability of the church, where transformation is nurtured in community.

WARNINGS ABOUT MAN’S WAY IN COUNSELING

BEWARE OF EMPTY PHILOSOPHY AND WORLDLY WISDOM

Colossians 2:8 warns, “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men...” Man’s wisdom may sound helpful, but it cannot change the heart. Biblical counselors must be discerning—rejecting secular methods and clinging to Christ.
