What's included in A Survey of Biblical Couseling

Lesson 1

Introductory Matters

We need to examine our lives regularly We need accountability partners. We need to take our sins seriously. In this lesson, you will be provided with an overview and framework on Biblical Counseling.

Lesson 2

Essential Elements

Truths are an essential part of counseling. Many times the counselor needs to lead people through these realities of hope. People often do not know them, or forget them, or lose sight of them in the midst of pain. Many times people do not understand how to implement these promises of God in their daily reality.

Lesson 3

Problem Development and Identification

The ideas in this lesson are foundational and the more advanced things we learn are dependent upon remembering these basics. The seven ways to biblically renew the mind will all need to be implemented and specific applications in each area of life will be necessary.

Lesson 4

Concrete Biblical Change

Many Christians do not know how to practically implement biblical truth. How does one actually go about changing? Helping the counselee implement these wonderful truths through structured homework will set you apart from most Christian and non-Christian counselors. homework is important. Learn these 10 principles and keep them in mind.

Lesson 5

Biblical Marriage Issues

Marriage is intended to be workable. Marriage can work and is intended as God’s most beautiful relationship between two people in this life. It is a covenant relationship (Genesis 2:22-25; Ephesians 5:21-33; Malachi 2:14; Matthew 19:36). The goal of marriage counseling, always, is to glorify God. All methods and techniques employed in the counseling enterprise must keep this goal in view (Colossians 1:10).

Lesson 6

Biblical Basics Regarding Families

The family is to maintain a proper relationship with God (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). Godly and successful child discipline requires that the parents be unified. (Proverbs 22:6; I Corinthians 1:10; Philippians 2:2). Children need discipline from the outside so that they can develop internal discipline.

Lesson 7

Anger, Resentment and Bitterness

When we find ourselves frustrated, we need to look at our motives. If God’s glory is at stake, our frustration will generate righteous anger, but if our desires, goals or demands are at stake, then the forthcoming anger will be sinful and lead to attacking something or someone (II Timothy 2:23-26; Philippians 2:5-7, 13-15). A believer can learn to control his/her temper/anger.

Lesson 8

Depression

Overcoming depression is often linked to responsibility. We must identify our responsibilities to God, family, work, and others, and determine to perform without regard for how we feel (Genesis 4:7; James 1:22-25). Depression frequently begins by not knowing and/or doing what God wants. A happy and rewarding life begins with pleasing God (I Peter 3:10-12; Deuteronomy 28:115).

Lesson 9

Anxiety (Worry) and Fear

A maturing, loving relationship with God is essential to overcoming fear. To overcome fear, do the good, the loving and the responsible thing regardless of your feeling of a sense of fear (II Timothy 1:7; I John 4:18; Mathew 10:26-31). To trust and act out commitment, we must praise the Lord, prohibit worry, pray with thanksgiving, and possess our minds. We must practice these disciplines regularly (Philippians 4:6, 7).

Lesson 10

Self-image and Idolatry and Determining Heart Issues

Developing an accurate self-image allows us to focus upon God by recognizing that we are who we are by God’s sovereign rule in our lives. Accepting His rule, rejoicing in His rule and relating to others and life as subjects of His rule eliminates “low self-esteem” by replacing it with an accurate self-image.
